A Ukrainian team will go to Saudi Arabia next week to begin talks with U.S. officials in an effort to reach a truce in the conflict that started in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Next Monday, I am set to visit Saudi Arabia to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Following the meeting, my team will stay in Saudi Arabia to collaborate with American partners. Ukraine seeks peace.
The event occurs a week following a tense meeting at the White House between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where an anticipated agreement regarding the exploration of Ukraine’s rare mineral reserves was not signed.
Zelensky stated in a Telegram publication after the Brussels summit that the war should be halted promptly, and Ukraine is prepared to collaborate around the clock with US and European partners for peace.
Zelensky confirmed Ukraine’s involvement in talks on Thursday, following a summit with EU leaders.
Minerals and truce deal between Russia and Ukraine
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special representative, said that the aim of the Ukraine meeting is to establish the required circumstances for a “peace deal and an initial truce.”
The talks will center on the mineral agreement the United States aims to finalize with Ukraine, along with a potential truce.
Zelensky emphasized that the main focus of discussions will be to ensure and closely oversee the cessation of hostilities in both air and sea, with a proposed halt on attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure facilities, as first suggested by France.
