JBS Leathers has partnered with Mindhive Global from New Zealand to implement artificial intelligence technology for assessing the quality of bovine leather at its 21 facilities in Brazil. New Zealand is known for its AI technology capable of evaluating 360 skins per production line per hour.

This artificial intelligence can complete the task with an accuracy of over 91%, according to the information provided by Mindhive. The product inspection and categorization process takes only four seconds, during which defects are detected across 25 different categories.

The technology deployment in JBS Leathers’ facilities is expected to be finalized by July, with two machines being installed each month until there are a total of 10 sorting equipment and three selection systems operational in the plants, as reported by “Value”.

JBS Leathers, the world’s biggest processor, inspects 7 million skins annually using manual labor.

Guilherme Motta, the president of the JBS leather division, mentioned in a statement to the “Valor” that implementing AI will enable the development of new leather grading criteria to meet customers’ stringent requirements and ensure product safety.

The system implemented by JBS will also lead to enhancements in manufacturing.

JBS seeks to enhance the grading of wet-blue leather, which is chromed-tanned and supplied to automotive, furniture, and footwear sectors through the deal.

Mindhive will offer centralized control panels for JBS to assess unit performance and productivity mapping, according to Mindhive Global CEO James Bayly, marking a significant step in business expansion in Brazil, as reported by “Valor.”

The executive stated that partnering with JBS Couros showcases the company’s system’s scalability and dependability.
